Music for uppervoices
In your infinity is an intimate ritual performance that invites remembrance, stillness, and slowing down. During this season of lengthening nights, candlelight, and All Souls’ Day, we pause to reflect on the perpetuum mobile — the great eternal motion of which we are a part. The program draws on the flowing, almost meditative power of Gregorian chant and the music of Hildegard von Bingen, as well as contemporary compositions inspired by them, including works by Andrew Smith and Diederik van der Laag. Hera weaves these contemplative melodies together with hidden gems from the European women’s choral repertoire.

Composition Workshop ft. Sean Doherty
Composition workshop with Sean Doherty.
Composers Seán Doherty (Ireland) and Diederik van der Laag (Netherlands) invite you to explore the art of original choral composition. You’ll walk away with creative tools as well as insights into the practise of a contemporary composer. The session emphasizes hands-on activities, the shared joy of music-making and is ideal for anyone interested in creating or commissioning original choral works, and welcomes all levels of experience.
The workshop will begin with introductions from each facilitator, offering insights into their backgrounds and approaches to composition. Attendees will then participate in a guided creative exercise focused on text setting and harmony, using real examples prepared by Seán and Diederik. This session will highlight practical techniques for setting poetry to music, navigating vocal ranges and crafting choral textures.
After a short break, participants will engage in a roundtable discussion on composer-conductor collaboration, exploring how to communicate musical ideas effectively and foster creative partnerships. The workshop will also touch on the evolving role of AI in music creation, with perspectives on its potential as a tool versus a creative replacement.
Throughout the session, participants will be encouraged to share their own ideas, ask questions, and even try short improvisational or compositional tasks in a supportive environment. The format is designed to spark dialogue, demystify the composition process, and celebrate the global diversity of choral music.

Storm in a Jar @Big Sing Haarlem

Ubi Caritas - Wishful Singing
Newly commissioned piece of mine on a text by Hildegard von Bingen:
Wishful Singing was founded in 2004. A group of friends, all members of the National Youth Choir, decided to go sailing together that summer. With no wind to carry them, they drifted, sang a few songs, and spent the evenings listening to the two CDs they had brought along: one by the King’s Singers and one by Brigitte Kaandorp. Their first earnings came from a street performance in Sneek, and on a terrace in Terherne and aboard Uncle Age’s skûtsje, they sang in exchange for a free meal and a generous bowl of ice cream. And so, Wishful Singing was born.
The program for this concert reflects the music that stirs their hearts: a rich palette of the finest a cappella works centered around the theme caritas et amor (compassion and love). Intimate and vibrant, solemn and playful. At the core of the program lies the music of 12th-century Hildegard of Bingen, whose work has inspired them for years with its enchanting simplicity. Beyond her roles as a mystic, theologian, composer, natural scientist, writer, and Benedictine abbess, Hildegard was also deeply involved in charitable work, caring for the sick and needy in her community.
Especially for this program, Diederik van der Laag composed a new piece for Wishful Singing based on one of Hildegard’s texts: Caritas habundat in omnia (compassion abounds in all things). They will also perform works by contemporary composers such as Ola Gjeilo and Caroline Shaw.

MetaPhysics
ΜεταPHYSICS - that which is perceptible beyond the senses... Abstract concepts such as existence, death, belief, love, and music all have a deeper, more transcendent quality. They are not quite describable and thus metaphysical. The Hague Vocal Ensemble conducted by Angeliki Ploka will perform a programme including many Netherlands premieres of contemporary composers, sung alongside three choral mainstays by Brahms, Grieg and Mahler.
